WEF recognizes Voluntary Biodiversity Credits potential to unlock financing for nature

The Voluntary Biodiversity Credits launched by ClimateTrade and Terrasos last May are gaining traction as a tool to direct financing towards nature conservation. The World Economic Forum (WEF) published a briefing paper this September, titled ‘Biodiversity Credits: Unlocking Financial Markets for Nature-Positive Outcomes’. In it, the authors remind readers of the importance of biodiversity conservation for the planet, but also for business.  “Over 1 million species are at risk of extinction, one third of the world’s topsoil has been degraded, forest fires are now more extensive and destructive than at any time in the past 10,000 years and 50% of the world’s coral reefs are destroyed. With more than half the world’s GDP moderately or highly dependent on nature and the services it provides, this loss of biodiversity integrity and functionality is increasingly undermining our economy, development, health and social stability,” the paper says. While the WEF notes that business needs to transition towards regenerative practices for long-term nature protection, it recognizes that biodiversity credits are an opportunity to “protect critical ecosystems that businesses and the world depend on from irreversible tipping points” during this transition. One of the case studies detailed in the paper revolves around the Voluntary Biodiversity Credits (VBCs) launched by ClimateTrade and Terrasos in May this year. Under the initiative, Terrasos is able to sell VBCs generated from conservation in Colombia’s Bosque de Niebla-El Globo Habitat Bank on the ClimateTrade marketplace. ClimateTrade’s Distributed Ledger Technology (DLT) makes it possible to overcome various conceptual and technical obstacles around the sale of VBCs, such as the lack of consensus on how to treat intervention or responsibility around nature conservation between communities, NGOs, governments and companies. It also adds clarity around the rules of the Protocol for the Emission of Voluntary Biodiversity Credits (Beta version) developed in the context of the Partnership for Forests to overcome the lack of trust resulting from years of misallocation of ecosystem and forest conservation financing going to the all-powerful voluntary carbon market. Since the launch of the VBCs in May, more than 100 credits have been sold on the marketplace, signalling strong interest in this form of climate mitigation. You can learn more about the Bosque de Niebla Habitat Bank Project and purchase Voluntary Biodiversity Credits on the ClimateTrade marketplace.

Galp offsets CO2 emissions equivalent to 670,000 km by car thanks to blockchain technology

Galp celebrates the offsetting of emissions equivalent to 670,000 kilometers traveled by car through the voluntary CO2 offsetting initiative included in the Mundo Galp loyalty program. The Mundo Galp loyalty program offers users the option of offsetting 100% of the CO2 emissions corresponding to a 1,000 km journey Galp contributes 50% of each offset Clients offset through contributions to two carbon mitigation projects in Galicia and Brazil The offsetting is done transparently thanks to the ClimateTrade blockchain platform whose API, which allows the client to monitor their positive impact, has been integrated into the Mundo Galp application Madrid, September 12, 2022 – Galp celebrates the offsetting of emissions equivalent to 670,000 kilometers traveled by car, or 100 complete laps around Spain, through the voluntary CO2 offsetting initiative included in the Mundo Galp loyalty program. The initiative, available since April 22, consists of offsetting CO2 emissions derived from 1,000-kilometre journeys made by Mundo Galp users, in the almost 600 service stations that make up the Galp Spain network. Through the Mundo Galp loyalty program, Galp offers users the option to offset CO2 through a contribution to two sustainable projects: one related to an environmental reforestation project in Galicia and another focused on renewable generation in Brazil. The first project, consisting of forest restoration in Monte Vecinales, Galicia, is certified by the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge of Spain and contributes to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 8 (decent work and economic growth), 10 ( reduced inequalities), 11 (sustainable cities and communities), 13 (climate action) and 15 (life on land). The second, the VTRM Renewable Energy wind project in Brazil, prevents the emission of an average of 439,950 tons of CO2 per year through the implementation and operation of wind power plants and contributes to SDGs 7 (affordable and clean energy), 8, 9 (industry, innovation and infrastructure) and 13. “We have a very clear purpose: we want to regenerate the future together. And this commitment is made tangible by committing to reducing the carbon intensity of our activities (we are committed to reducing the CO2 intensity of the energy we produce by 40% by the end of this decade), consolidating a leadership position in renewable energy and investing in new decarbonized business models. In this case, Galp takes care of managing and guaranteeing the success of the entire process and contributes half the amount of each offset,” explains João Diogo, Country Manager at Galp Spain and Head of B2C at Galp Iberia. The offsetting is formalized through Galp’s acquisition of credits from carbon mitigation projects in the voluntary market. Each credit equals one ton of CO2 or the equivalent amount of another greenhouse gas. These projects are framed within the scope of the United Nations Clean Development Mechanism, whose main objective is to promote sustainable development through clean technologies. The process is carried out in a transparent and traceable way thanks to ClimateTrade, a blockchain-based climate marketplace, whose API has been integrated into the Mundo Galp platform. Every time a client decides to offset their CO2 emissions, they receive a personalized certificate with information about the chosen project and a blockchain key that allows them to track their investment and ensure the positive impact generated on the environment. “Through this compensation program, Galp addresses the emissions of its clients in an efficient and transparent manner. I hope that other companies follow their example to advance in the decarbonization of the energy sector and its value chain,” adds Francisco Benedito, CEO of ClimateTrade. Currently, the equivalent of 185,000 kilometers have been offset through the Galicia project and 484,000 kilometers through the renewable energy project in Brazil, offering all users who refuel at Galp Spain service stations the possibility of taking direct action against climate change. About Galp Galp is an integrated energy company committed to developing efficient and sustainable solutions, both in its operations and in the integrated offering it makes available to its customers. PlanetWatch offers carbon offsetting to its community with ClimateTrade

30 November 2021, London – PlanetWatch, the world’s first decentralised indoor and outdoor air quality monitoring network, will now offer its user community the possibility to convert PLANET tokens into carbon credits issued by ClimateTrade to contribute to sustainable carbon emission reducing plans. Founded in  2020, PlanetWatch is a spinoff of the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). The data collected by PlanetWatch air sensors is transcribed onto the Algorand blockchain, which makes this air quality repository immutable. There are currently 20,000 air sensors spread across the globe, with the number of PlanetWatchers rapidly increasing. The network went live on Algorand MainNet in August 2020. PLANET tokens are the firm’s utility tokens, earned when a sensor sends valid air quality data – and they can now be used to offset carbon emissions. “PlanetWatch and its community play such an important role in monitoring air quality around the world. It is a pleasure for ClimateTrade to be able to empower them to take even more direct climate action through carbon offsetting”, said Francisco Benedito, CEO and Co-Founder of ClimateTrade. Claudio Parrinello, CEO of Planetwatch, added: “We are delighted to announce our partnership with ClimateTrade, and are looking forward to a mutually beneficial relationship that will enhance the impact of both companies in their efforts to create a more sustainable environment”.  “It is great to foresee that a fraction of our PLANET tokens will be used  to support climate mitigation projects, while helping ordinary people make their own cities smarter and cleaner, for the benefit of us all”. ClimateTrade helps companies achieve carbon neutrality by allowing them to invest capital in proven and reviewed climate projects that fit the needs of the company. The firm developed the first carbon credit platform with blockchain technology, which allows responsible companies to offset their emissions by purchasing peer-to-peer carbon credits directly from mitigation project developers, avoiding intermediaries.    About PlanetWatch s.a.s. Planetwatch s.a.s., is a high-tech startup based in France, less than a mile away from CERN. By leveraging synergically the Algorand blockchain, advanced data acquisition software developed at CERN and high-performance yet affordable air quality sensors, including advanced devices developed by a major research institute, Planetwatch decentralizes, incentivizes and gamifies environmental  monitoring. Blockchain Technology

The greenest blockchain technology: is it possible?

Algorand pledges to be the greenest blockchain and be carbon neutral thanks to the alliance with ClimateTrade. The Algorand network was designed from the ground up to minimally impact the environment. Because its consensus is not based on energy-intensive proof-of-work and requires minimal computational power or electricity, Algorand has been a leader in minimizing the environmental impact of blockchain technology. “We understand that the mechanics of measuring the environmental impact of a global, decentralized and widely used blockchain are nuanced and complex. That’s why we are teaming up with ClimateTrade to continue and double-down on our eco-conscious efforts.” said Silvio Micali, Founder of Algorand.  “Clean energy and addressing climate change are priorities for the United Nations, global organizations and governments alike. Algorand has a very low carbon footprint to begin with, and we are inspired by the leadership role the organization is taking to ensure the next generation of blockchain adoption is environmentally friendly,” said Francisco Benedito, CEO of ClimateTrade. How does Algorand offset its Carbon Footprint with Climatetrade? To achieve a carbon-negative network, Algorand and ClimateTrade will implement a sustainability oracle which will notarize Algorand’s carbon footprint on-chain for each epoch (a set amount of blocks). With its advanced smart contracts, Algorand will then lock the equivalent amount of carbon credit as an ASA (Algorand Standard Asset) into a green treasury so that its protocol keeps running as carbon-negative. Through this partnership, Algorand is able to leverage several projects of our marketplace that help to offset the low footprint of their network: The Southern Cardamom REDD+ project initiated by Wildlife Rescue and Wildlife Works, which protects the rainforest by avoiding more than 3 million tons of carbon emissions annually. The Vichada Gold Standard Climate Project which is aimed at reforestation in the Orinoco Department in Colombia. The Oaxaca Wind Project by Acciona which covers the electricity demand of 700,000 Mexican homes, avoiding the emission of 670,000 tons of CO2. The Sumatra Merang Peatland Project by ForestCO2 which aims to protect and restore the peatland ecosystem in Indonesia. With this alliance we not only work to achieve the carbon neutrality of Algorand but also to have a positive impact on the environment, which is how every innovative blockchain ecosystem should be in the future.
